Following The Flow

With International World Water Day approaching on March 22nd, I want to take you beyond the Leaning Tower to a stone giant that most visitors only see from a car window: the Medicean Aqueduct.

I’m usually the one leading you away from the selfie-sticks and into the hidden corners of Pisa. But this time, I’m inviting you to follow the flow... literally.

A Renaissance Lifeline

Built between 1592 and 1613, these over 930 arches aren’t just a pretty backdrop. They were a feat of survival. For centuries, they carried pure spring water from the Pisan Mountains straight into our city center.

What I love telling my guests is that this isn’t just a relic. During the 1943 bombings, when modern pipes failed, these Renaissance arches were the only reason Pisan families had water to drink. It’s a monument to resilience that still stands proud today!

True to my “anti-flow” style, we aren’t just walking a trail; we are tracing a lifeline.

⭐ 1. The High Road: Atop the City Walls

We meet in the city center to walk the Mura di Pisa. From 11 meters up, we’ll look down at hidden hanging gardens and medieval rooftops that 99% of tourists never see.

2. The Intersection: Piazza delle Gondole

We descend at the Piazza delle Gondole tower. This is the “secret” spot where the medieval defensive walls meet the Renaissance aqueduct. It was the original “arrival gate” for the city’s water.

3. The Escape: Toward the Mountains

From here, we leave the city noise behind. We follow the arches as they stretch toward the village of Asciano. As we walk, the city fades, the mountains grow larger, and we literally follow the path of the water back to its ancient source. It’s flat, easy, and feels like traveling 400 years back in time.

This March, let’s slow down. Let’s walk the path that kept Pisa alive for centuries. We’ll talk about Medici legends, “water peace,” and the quiet beauty of the Pisan countryside.
