My GYM

Most people think they are learning English, but in fact, what they do, they study the language, which is fine, English is an interesting subject to study. Yet it is also and above all a powerful tool of communication spoken and heard by millions of people across the planet; therefore if your goal is to join those people, and you are not a native speaker, studying a language you cannot speak will prove totally useless.

Our modern gym is a short for gymnasium, a Latin word originating from the Greek gymnasion, a training facility for competitors in public games. The word is a derivative of gymnòs meaning “naked”, as athletes competed nude. The gymnastai were the teachers, coaches in fact: trainers of the athletes.
In time, the gymnasium became a place for more than exercise, due to the recognition by the Greeks of the strong relation between athletics, education and health, and it soon turned into a place for socializing and engaging in intellectual pursuits.

Why did Greek speakers in the Roman Empire wanted to learn Latin? One ofthe most important reasons for learning Latin was a desire to be a lawyer. As the Roman Empire spread across the Greek-speaking world, Roman law spread with it, and over time Roman law took over more and more of the ordinary legal business that had originally been handled using local legal codes. For example, inheritance from a Roman citizen was governed by Roman law – and after AD 212 most people in the Empire were Roman citizens. Roman law was fundamentally Latin-based; for example, citizens’ wills had to be drafted in Latin in order to be valid. And since wills constituted a significant percentage of legal work, a lawyer would find himself at a distinct disadvantage if he could not draft them.

Ma cosa c’entrano Greci e Romani ?
A walk along the ancient roads of Ostiam gives you a real feeling for the hustle and bustle of the various businesses, like grain merchants or shippers, the tavern owners, and the townspeople out and about, running errands, having a snack, going to the baths, or even chatting with their neighbors at the public (and communal) latrine. You walk the ancient roads, with the ruts cut into them by carts, you can picture the houses, the finer ones with paintings on the walls and mosaics on the floors. Do take precautions from the sun as the site has little shade, and bring a water bottle which you can refill at a few drinking fountains in the site. There is a small cafeteria, but you’d be better off bringing a lunch and having a picnic, as several families were doing.
